POSITION TITLE: Director of Public Policy
EMPLOYER: New Family & Tech Policy Nonprofit Organization
LOCATION: Washington, DC/Remote (Hybrid)
POSITION TYPE: Full time, Exempt (Salaried)
COMPENSATION: $100,000–$175,000. Compensation commensurate with experience, education, and training.

POSITION OVERVIEW
A new family and tech policy 501(c)(3) nonprofit seeks a Director of Public Policy to lead the development and implementation of the organization’s public policy agenda. The organization is a nonpartisan project focused on protecting childhood, strengthening American families, and promoting healthy technology usage. Its efforts promote healthy technology policies so families can flourish and children can learn, play, and thrive.
The organization’s public policy agenda will have an initial focus on advocating for local and state policies to address the appropriate use of technology in schools, including advocacy for internet connected device-free school policies. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the policy-making process, strong communication skills, experience building coalitions, and a passion for improving family and educational outcomes through healthy technology use.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Policy Development: Advocate for the adoption of policies that support families in the digital age, initially focused on policies impacting cell phones in schools, to improve learning outcomes, mental health, and well-being. This includes model policies and playbooks for enforcement and implementation.
- Advocacy for Responsible Device Policies: Lead initiatives aimed at promoting the removal or regulated use of cell phones and other internet-connected devices in educational settings, working to establish clear guidelines that prioritize student well-being and educational effectiveness.
- Research and Analysis: Encourage and promote research and analysis on the impact of cell phone use in schools on student learning and well-being. Produce reports, policy briefs, and position papers to inform stakeholders, media, and policymakers of the need for reform.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with educators, school leaders, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders to foster collaboration on technology policies in schools.
- Public Relations: Serve as a spokesperson for the organization on public policy issues related to technology use in education, presenting at conferences, providing testimony, engaging with media, and delivering impactful presentations.
- Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the leadership team to align public policy initiatives—particularly regarding technology in educational settings—with the organization’s strategic goals.
- Monitoring Legislation: Stay informed about emerging legislation and regulations affecting technology use in schools, proactively responding to relevant developments and promoting evidence-based policies.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES
- At least seven years of experience in public policy, advocacy, or a related role, with experience related to technology, education, family issues, or social science.
- Strong knowledge of the policy-making process, legislative procedures, and current issues at the intersection of technology, education, and family life.
- Proven track record of successfully developing and implementing policy strategies.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with experience in public speaking and stakeholder engagement.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and across various organizations and sectors.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Passion for healthy technology use and family health.
